How to Make an Old Mattress More Comfortable

How to Make an Old Mattress More Comfortable

By Brian Acton

Over time, the thousands of hours you spend in bed will cause your mattress to sag and wear out. That effect could be even worse if your bed was never that comfortable to begin with. If your old mattress is no longer providing the comfort and support you need, it’s probably time to replace it.

Unfortunately, good mattresses are expensive. You might be looking for ways to get a little more life out of your old mattress before you buy a new one. Here are some tips for making an old mattress more comfortable.

  1. Rotate and Flip Your Mattress - Your mattress will naturally sag and dip in the areas that carry the most weight. To more evenly distribute this wear and tear, you should periodically rotate your mattress 180°. Even if you haven’t been doing this regularly, you can start now to get the benefit of lying on different areas of your bed.If you have a double-sided mattress (meaning you can sleep on either side), you should also periodically flip your mattress at the same time you rotate it. This helps each side of your mattress wear out evenly and extends its lifespan.
  1. Get a Mattress Topper - Mattress toppers can protect your mattress from spills and stains, but they can also make your bed more comfortable. They sit between your mattress and sheets and provide an additional layer of comfort and support. Typically, they can be washed with the rest of your bedding. There are many different types of mattress toppers, so do your research before you pick one.
  1. Get the Right Pillow - If you’re going to sleep on an old mattress, you should invest in a quality pillow. Unsupportive pillows make it difficult to sleep and can even lead to neck or back problems. Treat yourself to a comfortable, supportive pillow to improve your sleep quality. Unsure if you need a better pillow? Here are six signs your pillow isn’t getting the job done.
  1. Get the Right Sheets and Comforter - Are your sheets scratchy or uncomfortable? Is your comforter too hot or too cold? Bad bedding can make the experience of lying on an old mattress even worse. Make sure to invest in quality, comfortable bedding to achieve a better night’s sleep.
  1. Make Your Bedroom More Comfortable - Changing your bedroom won’t make your mattress more comfortable, but it may help you get a good night’s rest. If your bedroom is too hot or too cold, or if there’s too much light and noise pollution, your sleep can be affected. If you can’t replace your mattress, try making small improvements to your bedroom environment.

In Closing - If your mattress is sagging or uncomfortable, you will need to replace it eventually. Bad mattresses can affect the quality of your sleep and even cause neck or back pain. But if you need a little time to save up for a new mattress, making some small improvements now can help improve your sleep environment.
