What is Hygge - and why do you need it in your life?

What is Hygge - and why do you need it in your life?

By Sarah Balke

A few months back someone asked me if I knew what Hygge was, and if I was aware of it. This glorious, but quirky word, was completely foreign to me - so I set out to learn more.

There are a lot of different definitions of Hygge, probably because there is not a great translation to English. This Danish word is used to describe a mood or the feeling of comfort - warmth (not necessarily the heat kind) and coziness.

If there is one thing 2020 taught us, it’s that we all need to put a priority on self care, staying at home - A LOT - can be very challenging. Think back to March - we had shows to binge watch, sourdough bread to bake, spring cleaning, outdoor activities, and figuring out how to connect with friends and family via Zoom. Well, the reality is, life is not all baking, Zoom, and fun for so many people. Our healthcare and frontline workers are exhausted and mental health issues are on the rise.

This is where Hygge comes in! A mood or feeling doesn’t have to cost a thing! Yep, totally free and you are in control. A feeling is not something you can buy, but rather a moment you create that makes you feel good.

Here are a few things you can do to experience a little Hygge each day.

  1. Wash your sheets and put them on your bed straight from the dryer. Grab your favorite blanket and snuggle into the warmth and comfort of fresh sheets while you catch up on some zzzz’s or just relax.
  2. Pour a cup of your favorite warm beverage and curl up with a good book, your favorite companion - human or pet, and if a fireplace is available, start a fire.
  3. Find smells that remind you of your favorite things or people. For me it’s lemon, fresh laundry, warm cookies, or my husbands shirt after he’s worn it.
  4. Watch a Hallmark movie! No matter how predictable they may be, it will leave you feeling comfy and happy.
  5. Take a hot bath or extra long shower, which ever you prefer. Shut your eyes, take several deep breaths while slowly counting backwards from 100, and let the warmth consume you. (Note: If doing this in the shower, put your hand on a wall or grab bar so you don’t tip over).

Self-care can be hard and for some, may even feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you are the type of person who would rather take care of someone else. As we progress into 2021, give yourself permission to take care of yourself too. Create moments of Hygge each day - you won’t regret it!
